  1. Small Victories

To make a long story shortish:

A good friend of ours moved from our neighborhood to Florida, permanently, a little over a year ago. His real estate agent has been putzing around, and so the house is seldom shown -- and only gets attention when we point out to the friend, and he goes to some effort to get in touch with the real estate agent, that the flyer box has been empty a while or the yard needs mowing or whatever.

Real Estate lady leans on our friendship for the seller...

An illness that affects cats is somehow making the rounds.

The first symptom is that I notice how Marco (the Rescue Kitty!) is not eating. Then it occurs to me that, while I am still cleaning poo out of the poopy bins, I have not actually caught Marco making any nonliquid deposits in the past while.

Then I pick him up, gently, with full support for all parts of an eleven-year-old guy, and he complains that it hurts when I do so. But...

When I was a little girl -- we're talking about the nineteen-seventies here -- we lived in southern California for about five years and change. I had no idea that we were poor: we lived in military housing, and my dad had a clunker of a motorcycle for "his car" because it only got used when he wasn't on a six-month naval deployment, and my mom scrimped and saved until she could afford a seasonal pass to the San Diego Zoo and to Disneyland. We'd visit the zoo once a month...

Happy New Year, everybody! I'm going out of town for the night. Here's my happy end-of-2008 story:

It's been suggested that I'm hard to shop for, particularly when my primary hobbies are reading, tabletop gaming (which involves ... reading), and trying to learn to make useful things (which requires, as a repeated step, a whole lot of reading). So I try to offer some suggestions, once a specific complaint is offered about an upcoming present-giving occasion, of nifty...
  5. Very sorry for our loss

Eartha Kitt passed away on Thursday, eighty-one years old, still delighted with life and smokin' hot. On the forum where I got the news, a fellow mourner posted the following technically-safe-for-work video of Herself from a benefit concert last year:

    Love For...

    I know these guys, actually.
Well, not most of them -- I've met two of the troopers, and I've no idea who's wearing Vader because I don't recognize the details of the costume as one of the Vaders I've watched jawing and comparing ideas. But let me tell you, there's nothing quite the same as a geekette being asked to come in, please not mind the partial nudity, and use her thinner fingers to untangle a strap so we can get a fella out of his buttplate ... and get...
  7. Rantings....

Here's the deal: When my voice changed at puberty, I wound up with something that's neither a girlish soprano nor a warm womanly tone. My speaking voice is kind of bland, no matter how much enthusiasm I put into it, and my post-adolescence-shortened singing range frankly matches Gonzo the Great in entirely too many ways. I don't make dogs howl, but karaoke contestants are never going to be nervous about my chances.

(That said, the husbands and I once did an impromptu a...

So deadly, Mom'd only make it once each year: in time for us to leave a piece for Santa with a glass of milk, and a piece for Rudolph with another glass and a straw. (Note: Christmas is RUINED if the straw is not set into the glass in the fridge for Rudolph. Deer need their teeth, they need that calcium!)

Make 2 pies at once: one blueberry, one cherry. It is also possible to make 4 pies at once (two of...
  9. Therapy

    08/16/07 14:15:55 | 0 eh?

Good to know: writing exercises, as part of a therapeutic or psychiatric treatment, are not as useful when typed on the computer. Y'see, it's awfully easy to start proofreading and revising yourself when you've got that handy cut-paste feature ... and next thing you know, you're moving sentences and paragraphs around to make your stream of consciousness look professional ....

Meanwhile, across town! I'm rereading the...

    Today's my Dad's birthday.

Due to some events back at the beginning of the year, we're not speaking to each other -- and probably never will again. His choice, not mine. So I can't call and wish him "happy birthday". He once called me on my birthday when he was vexed at another of my siblings, and we got into a horrible fight that ruined the party in progress; I won't do that to him, even if I thought he'd take the call. Darling #1 Husband sent him a...
